CDP vs DMP: what is the difference?
Updated Oct 30, 2026 · AllCDP Global editors · figures from the catalog, checked Oct 29, 2026
A data management platform (DMP) collects mostly anonymous, cookie-based audience data, often from third parties, and uses it for ad targeting for a limited time. A CDP builds persistent profiles of known and anonymous customers from your own first-party data and uses them across marketing, service and analytics. With third-party cookies in decline, CDPs have taken over most of that work.
What data does each one use?
A DMP works with cookies, device IDs and audience segments bought from data providers. Profiles are anonymous and short-lived: they expire with the cookie. A CDP uses first-party data: events, purchases, CRM records and consented identifiers such as email or phone, stored for as long as the customer relationship lasts.
What is each one used for?
A DMP is an advertising tool: it builds audiences for programmatic campaigns and lookalike targeting. A CDP serves several teams: it sends audiences to ad platforms too, but also powers email and app messaging, personalization on the website, analytics and service.
Most CDPs in our catalog send audiences to ad platforms: 82 document Google Ads audiences and 87 document Meta audiences.
Why did DMPs fade?
Browsers restricted third-party cookies, privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA limited the use of third-party data, and ad platforms moved to matching on hashed first-party identifiers. Several vendors that started as DMPs now sell CDPs; in our catalog, mediarithmics and Zeotap combine CDP features with audience data for advertising.
Do I need a DMP if I have a CDP?
Usually not. A CDP with ad-platform connectors covers retargeting, suppression and lookalike seed audiences from first-party data. Publishers that sell audiences to advertisers are the main exception: they may still need a separate audience platform.
FAQ
Is a DMP the same as a CDP?
No. A DMP works with anonymous, short-lived advertising data; a CDP keeps persistent profiles from your own first-party data and uses them in many channels.
Can a CDP do ad targeting?
Yes. Most CDPs sync audiences to Google, Meta, TikTok or LinkedIn, matching customers by hashed email or phone.
