What is a customer data platform (CDP)?
Updated Oct 30, 2026 · AllCDP Global editors · figures from the catalog, checked Oct 29, 2026
A customer data platform (CDP) is software that collects customer data from websites, mobile apps, stores, CRM and other systems, merges it into one persistent profile per person and makes those profiles available to marketing, analytics and service tools. Teams use it to build segments, personalize messages and measure results without asking engineers for every data pull.
What does a CDP do?
A CDP does three jobs. It collects first-party data: events from the website and app, purchases from the store or POS, records from CRM and support tools. It unifies that data into a profile for each customer, using identity resolution to recognize the same person across devices and channels. And it activates the profiles: sends audiences to email, ad platforms and other tools, or runs messages itself.
Unlike a data warehouse, a CDP is built for marketing and customer teams: segments, computed attributes and audiences are configured in a user interface, and changes reach the channels in minutes or in real time.
What kinds of CDPs are there?
AllCDP Global sorts 127 platforms into four kinds:
- Packaged CDPs (47 in the catalog) collect, store and activate data in their own storage: for example Twilio Segment, Tealium or Amperity.
- Composable CDPs (13) work on top of your data warehouse instead of copying data into their own storage: for example Hightouch or GrowthLoop. See composable vs packaged CDP.
- Suite CDPs (18) are part of a larger marketing or CRM suite: Salesforce Data 360, Adobe Real-Time CDP, SAP, Microsoft and Oracle.
- Engagement platforms with a CDP module (49) combine customer profiles with their own email, SMS, push and in-app messaging: for example Klaviyo, Bloomreach or Insider One.
Who needs a CDP?
A CDP pays off when customer data lives in several systems and the team cannot get a single view of the customer quickly. Typical signs: the same customer appears as different records in the store, the app and the email tool; building a segment requires an analyst; ad audiences are uploaded by hand; personalization works in one channel only.
If you have one sales channel, a few thousand customers and one marketing tool, the CRM or the email platform is usually enough. The CDP vs CRM guide explains where the line runs.
How much does a CDP cost?
Only 20% of the platforms in our catalog publish pricing; the rest quote on request. Among published USD plans, the median entry price is $250 per month. Vendors bill by different units: profiles, monthly tracked users, events, contacts or credits. The CDP pricing guide shows how to compare quotes.
How do I choose a CDP?
Start from the use cases you need in the first year, the systems the CDP must connect to and your security requirements, then compare platforms that fit. The AllCDP Global rating ranks platforms by public data, and the guide to choosing a CDP gives a step-by-step checklist.
FAQ
What does CDP stand for?
CDP stands for customer data platform: software that builds a persistent, unified profile of each customer from first-party data and makes it available to other systems.
Is a CDP the same as a data warehouse?
No. A warehouse stores data for analysts and BI; a CDP turns customer data into profiles and audiences that marketing tools can use. Composable CDPs work on top of a warehouse, so the two are often used together.
Does a CDP send emails?
Some do. Engagement platforms with a CDP module send email, SMS and push themselves; packaged and composable CDPs usually pass audiences to a separate messaging tool.
