CDP vs CRM: what is the difference?
Updated Oct 30, 2026 · AllCDP Global editors · figures from the catalog, checked Oct 29, 2026
A CRM is the system of record for relationships: sales and service teams use it to manage known contacts, deals and cases. A CDP collects behavioral and transactional data from every channel, including anonymous visitors, merges it into one profile per customer and sends audiences to marketing tools. Many companies use both, with the CDP feeding the CRM.
What does a CRM do that a CDP does not?
A CRM is built around people who interact with your team: leads, contacts, accounts, deals, support cases and tasks. Records are created and edited by sales and service staff, and the CRM manages pipelines, forecasts and service workflows. A CDP does not manage deals or cases.
What does a CDP do that a CRM does not?
A CDP is built for large volumes of automatically collected data: page views, app events, purchases, email engagement and data from other systems. It recognizes the same person across devices and channels (identity resolution), keeps anonymous visitors until they identify themselves, computes attributes such as lifetime value or churn risk and syncs audiences to ad platforms and messaging tools.
In our catalog, 95% of platforms document identity resolution and 85% document real-time profiles.
Do I need both?
In B2C companies with many customers and channels, usually yes: the CRM serves sales and service, and the CDP unifies the data and powers marketing. Many CDPs have ready-made Salesforce or HubSpot connectors: 50 platforms in our catalog list a Salesforce integration and 40 list HubSpot.
In B2B with a small number of accounts, the CRM often stays the center, and a B2B CDP adds website and product behavior to accounts. See CDPs for B2B.
Can a CRM replace a CDP?
Some suites combine both: Salesforce Data 360 and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Insights are CDPs that sit next to the vendor's CRM. A plain CRM without event collection and identity resolution does not replace a CDP: it lacks behavioral data on anonymous visitors and real-time audiences.
