How to choose a CDP: a step-by-step guide
Updated Oct 30, 2026 · AllCDP Global editors · figures from the catalog, checked Oct 29, 2026
To choose a CDP, write down the use cases for the first year, list the data sources and channels it must connect, decide between a packaged and a composable architecture, check security and hosting requirements, and compare total cost at your data volume. Shortlist three to five platforms that fit, then run a proof of concept on your own data.
Which use cases come first?
Name three to five concrete tasks: for example a single customer view for service, abandoned-cart messages, ad audiences from purchase data or churn prediction. Each task implies features: identity resolution, real-time events, journeys, ad connectors or predictive models. The use cases component of the AllCDP Global Index checks six typical tasks for every platform.
Which systems must it connect to?
List the data sources (website, app, e-commerce platform, POS, CRM, support) and destinations (email, SMS, ad platforms, analytics). Check ready-made connectors rather than generic APIs: on each platform page we mark which of 22 common systems have a connector built by the vendor. For Shopify stores, see the list of CDPs for Shopify.
Packaged or composable?
If your customer data already lives in Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks or Redshift and a data team maintains it, consider a composable CDP. Otherwise a packaged CDP or an engagement platform with a CDP module will start faster. The composable vs packaged guide compares the two.
What security and compliance checks matter?
Ask for a current SOC 2 Type II report and an ISO 27001 certificate, check that data can be hosted in your region, and confirm SSO, SCIM provisioning and an audit log. In our catalog, 40% of platforms declare SOC 2 Type II and 43% offer EU data hosting. Healthcare companies need a HIPAA business associate agreement: 26 platforms declare HIPAA support. See CDPs for enterprise.
How to compare prices?
Vendors bill by different units, so ask each one for a quote at your volume of profiles, events and destinations, and add implementation and messaging costs. The CDP pricing guide lists the common billing units.
How to run the shortlist?
- Pick three to five platforms from the rating, the catalog filters or a comparison.
- Send each vendor the same use cases and data volumes, and ask the questions listed on each platform page.
- Run a proof of concept on a sample of your own data: check identity resolution quality and how long it takes to build and sync an audience.
- Ask references in your industry how long implementation took and who did the work.
FAQ
How long does a CDP implementation take?
From a few weeks for an engagement platform or a CDP with ready connectors to several months for an enterprise CDP with many sources; ask vendors for typical timelines and references.
Should I choose the platform with the highest Global Index?
Not necessarily. The index summarizes public data across seven components; the right platform is the one that covers your use cases, systems and security requirements at an acceptable cost.
